An issue brought up at the October creative conversation meeting was that the arts community needed to find more ways to collaborate, and that more needed to be done outside of downtown. It seems that there are too many that are more interested in protecting their "turf" than in working together to help the arts community in Sioux Falls grow and thrive. We must work past those feelings...

The Sioux Empire Arts Council does have many resources for artists of all ages -- visual, performing, literary. We are often able to assist on creative ideas that are brought to our attention -- There are resources and a knowledge base available to help on new projects.

Katrina McKinney with Jazz & Blues described the After Hours program that she has put together with Audra Fullerton at the Washington Pavilion and Rebecca Breitag from the SD Symphony. They have built a program for young adults aged 20 to 40 that allows them to buy into one program from each of the three series. The programs selected from each series were especially chosen based on their appeal to a younger audience. A social event was built around each concert or show to lure a new audience to these events at a cost that is a little easier to live with. Tickets for the entire package were $100; now that the first program is over, the price has been reduced to $66 for the last two performance/social events. It seems as if this is a great introductory package for young arts patrons -- can we help spread the word on this program??

The first creative conversations meeting took place on October 24, 2006, at the Horse Barn Arts Center in Falls Park. An overwhelming theme of the meeting was that there were not enough places in Sioux Falls for emerging visual artists to exhibit their work. There was talk of thinking "outside the box" on this, and coming up with places to exhibit that did not fall within the generally recognized confines of galleries or art stores. For example -- downtown store windows; bowling alleys; restaurants; get-togethers at friend's homes where art is exhibited; etc. Everyone was challenged to come up with some new ideas on this. Some research will also be done into the empty building spaces in downtown.

Call to all student and emerging artists! Craftsman Creek is looking for work for an upcoming show

We are looking for all student and emerging artists living in the greater Sioux Falls area!

Craftsman Creek Studio & Gallery will be hosting a show on Friday, December 8th, featuring work by emerging artists from in and around Sioux Falls and student artists from any of the area Colleges or Universities. This show will feature an exciting, diverse selection of artwork all for under $500. The goal of this show is not only to provide young artists with a first opportunity to show their work in an established gallery, but also to offer artwork at a price that anyone in the community can afford.

The deadline for "Intent to Participate" in this show is Wednesday, November 1st. Any artist wishing to have their artwork featured on the front of our event postcards or posters must email jpegs of their work with a dpi of at least 300 dpi, by Monday, November 6th. We need a list of all work that you wish to have shown (max. 3 pieces), along with medium, prices and dimensions listed by Monday, November 20th. The artwork need not be completed at that time.

Important Dates/Deadlines:
Monday, November 1st- Respond with your Intent to Participate
Monday, November 6th- Deadline for images of work for promo material
Monday, November 20th - Deadline for list of work to be submitted
Saturday, December 2nd - Deadline for dropping your artwork off
Friday, December 8th - Gallery Reception: 5-8 pm (work will hang thru late
January/early February unless other arrangements are made)

Specifications for artwork: This show is open to artists working in any medium, however there are some requirements that must me met for work to be shown.

1) Work must arrive READY TO HANG/SHOW! Drawings, paintings and photos must be framed or prepared to hang on the wall. All work must be wired on back (NO SAWTOOTH HANGERS), pottery or sculpture must have pads on the bottom, etc.
2) All artwork must have the artists’ name, title and price listed somewhere on the piece when it arrives.
3) All artwork must be priced under $500, and this price should include a 25%
commission for the gallery (this commission is lower than the usual gallery fee, as this is a one time show.) If you need any assistance in pricing your work, please feel free to contact us.

** We reserve the right to refuse any artwork which is submitted. Please note that not all artwork submitted will be accepted.
